InStyle / Jessica Juliao Originally a French skincare staple, micellar water is a multitasking product loved for its ability to cleanse skin and remove makeup, all in one step. A great alternative to makeup wipes and face washes, the rinse-free formulas are gentle yet effective. The thing is, with micellar water’s popularity rising, finding the right one for your skin concerns can feel like a daunting task. To make your search easier, we identified 32 top-rated micellar waters that work across all skin types. Then we recruited a team of testers to analyze each formula and rate them based on their feel, absorption, effectiveness, hydration, and overall appearance after application. Ultimately, we were able to narrow down the original pool of products to the 10 best micellar waters on the market. With five stars across the board, Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 stands out because it effortlessly cleans away every bit of makeup and dirt without stripping the skin of essential moisture. Keep reading for our full list of the best micellar waters, according to our lab tests. Target Our Ratings Feel 5/5 Effectiveness 5/5 Hydration 5/5 Appearance 5/5 Absorption 5/5 What We Love The micellar water is formulated with high quality ingredients that effortlessly clean the skin without stripping it of its natural moisture. What We Don’t Love It’s not the best at removing waterproof mascara. Coveted by makeup artists and makeup lovers alike, it’s no surprise Garnier’s original micellar cleansing water checked off all our boxes. Formulated without parabens, alcohol, oil, fragrance, or sulfates, this water easily cleanses the skin without stripping it of its natural oils. Not to mention, this product is great for those with sensitive skin as it’s non-irritating and gentle. The lightweight formula easily absorbs into skin and effortlessly removes any makeup, dirt, and grime. With just one swipe, our tester’s skin was left feeling revitalized and cleaner than ever. “It feels like a fresh shower, brightening my skin and bringing life back into my face,” he says. I’ve been using this micellar water for years, and it still amazes me how much grime it removes. I especially love how easy it is to use The no-rinse formula makes it great for those who are always on the go or those who need a quick clean without the hassle. While it does a superb job at removing almost every trace of makeup, you might have to use a bit more elbow grease or just a few extra cotton pads to fully get waterproof mascara off. What We Don’t Love This micellar water doesn’t function as a makeup remover. The sound of mushroom-infused skincare may sound off-putting, but the natural ingredient is actually a skincare wonder that helps hydrate and brighten skin — and it happens to be the star ingredient in this formula. Aptly named, this micellar water is packed with a unique blend of plants and mushrooms to soothe skin, visibly reduce redness, and replenish hydration. Our tester raves about how revitalizing the product feels “The consistency is extremely comfortable and lightweight, and I barely noticed that I put on anything at all,” she says. “I love washing my face with face wash, however, this micellar water makes my skin feel so much softer than any cleanser I’ve used.” It’s important to note, that unlike other micellar waters on this list, this is not a makeup remover, so we recommend using this as the second step of your cleansing routine to achieve that extra clean feeling. What We Don’t Love Our tester mentions that it made her skin feel a bit tingly, which may be off-putting for some. Skincare should be simple and straightforward, and Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Micellar Water is as easy as it gets. Formulated with vitamins B3, B5, and C, this water enriches the skin with gentle ingredients while cleansing away all traces of makeup and dirt. If you’re looking to incorporate micellar water into your routine, this budget-friendly product is a great place to start It’s gentle, easily removes grime, and comes at a great price point. Not to mention, the product efficiently removes makeup, too, so you get a great two-for-one. The simple ingredients thoroughly clean the skin and absorb excess oil. “I am very impressed with the way the product works; It effectively removed all my makeup to the point where using this was better than washing my face,” our tester shares. She notes that it also made her face feel slightly tingly, but in a good, refreshed way. What We Don’t Love It has a light fragrance that may irritate some. While there’s no magical well water that will solve all our skin concerns, Avene thermal spring water is the next best thing. It contains beneficial minerals, derived from the earth’s deepest and oldest dolomite rocks, that help soothe skin and aid in skin conditions, like sunburns and irritation from shaving — and it’s also the key ingredient in this micellar water. Upon application, our tester was amazed at how lightweight and comfortable the formula feels. “It absorbs extremely fast, leaving my skin refreshed and hydrated,” she says. Because this product is a cleansing lotion, it’s no surprise it nourishes your skin barrier. But, it also gently removes pollutants, relieving skin of the harmful pore-clogging particles. It’s worth noting that this does have a faint smell, but our tester says it’s a nice, subtle addition. “The scent is gentle and soothing — very pleasant and not too overpowering.” All in all, our tester loves the product so much she started integrating it into her routine. “I would say Avene lives up to its brand name in creating such high-quality products,” she adds. What We Don’t Love Because the formula is extremely gentle, it may take a few swipes to remove all your makeup. Finding products that work with sensitive skin can be a struggle, but luckily this micellar water from Vichy was made specifically with sensitive skin in mind. Formulated without alcohol or other harsh ingredients, this cleansing water features Vichy’s mineral-rich volcanic water — which is loaded with 15 minerals to be exact — and micellar technology that attracts and traps any residual dirt. Plus, it also includes vitamin B5, a humectant, which soothes the skin and enhances glow. Our tester loves the makeup removing and cleansing capabilities, highlighting that it took her makeup off “with ease” and left her skin feeling “clean and hydrated.” That said, because it’s gentle, it does take a few more swipes to thoroughly remove makeup especially waterproof mascara compared to other options on this list, but that is a minor inconvenience that can be overlooked. What We Don’t Love It has a light cucumber scent that some may not like. Concocted with a blend of almond oil, organic matcha tea extract, and echinacea flower extract, this cleansing water hydrates skin, removes excess oil, and boosts collagen production. Our tester enjoyed how this micellar water made her skin feel, giving her complexion a refreshing “burst of energy.” Beyond the feeling, she was also impressed to see her eye makeup melt away in just one simple swipe, with no lingering mascara left under her eyes something that is dreadful to deal with. In addition to the key ingredients, this is enriched with chamomile, cucumber, horse chestnuts, and aloe vera, giving the water a nice, spa-like scent that doesn’t overwhelm the senses. Our tester highlights that while it leaves her skin glowy it also absorbs any excess oil. “I would definitely recommend this product to everyone!” she says. “It meets all the quality checks It’s hydrating, smells good, and doesn't leave any residue on skin.” Price at time of publish $32 Size fl oz Good for Oily and Normal skin types Scented Yes InStyle / Jessica Juliao Sephora Our Ratings Feel 5/5 Effectiveness 5/5 Hydration 5/5 Appearance 5/5 Absorption 5/5 What We Love It contains a blend of three ceramides to calm and hydrate dry skin. What We Don’t Love Our tester wishes there was a slight scent added to the product. This milky micellar water from Drunk Elephant contains a three ceramide blend key for maintaining the moisture balance of your skin. Besides the hydrating benefits, ceramides also aid in strengthening skin’s elasticity, so your complexion will appear more plump and revived after using this. For our tester, the difference in suppleness was immediate. “[The formula] feels so nice, like velvet. I keep touching my face because it feels so hydrated now,” she says. Beyond the way it makes skin feel, it also does an exemplary job of removing makeup, dirt and debris — this is thanks to melon seed oil, which nourishes skin and helps dissolve makeup. While the product works wonders to revitalize skin, it also comes in a chic bottle made of recyclable packaging that easily dispenses the perfect amount of product onto a cotton pad — the cherry on top. Although non-fragrant products are great for sensitive skin, our tester wishes there was a light fragrance. But even without, she shares that she plans on buying this product because she loves it so much. Price at time of publish $28 Size 8 fl oz and fl oz Good for Dry and Normal skin types Scented No InStyle / Jessica Juliao Neogen Lab What We Love It nourishes skin, instantly alleviating any redness or irritation. What We Don’t Love Because it’s a micellar oil, it has to be rinsed off. Unlike other micellar cleansers on this list, this one requires a quick rinse because rather than a water, it’s actually an oil. The consistency packs a gentle punch Removing all impurities while also deeply nourishing your complexion. “I can feel the oils breaking down and deep cleaning my face,” shares our tester. Made from cica tree and tea tree, this micellar oil tames skin flare ups and prevents future breakouts from popping up. “My skin is usually very reactionary, but this oil cleanser leaves me glowing,” our tester adds. The only fault we could find is that this oil requires a quick rinse, but in doing so you ensure you’re thoroughly washing your face. What We Don’t Love While you can use this on your entire face, it is specifically targeted to remove stubborn eye and lip makeup. Looking for a makeup remover that won’t totally strip your skin? Medik8 Eyes and Lips Micellar Cleanser dissolves stubborn makeup while simultaneously soothing skin. With ingredients like vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid, this thick water-like cleanser hydrates the eye and lip areas, eliminating the look of fine lines and completely erasing any lingering waterproof eyeliner or lipstick. “I was apprehensive it would leave some residue due to the fact that it's a bit thicker and milkier, but it absorbs like a dream,” shares our tester. While this product can be applied to the whole face, it is important to note that it’s intended to be used on your eyes and lips. What We Don’t Love The bottle dispenses a lot of product at once. Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micellar Water is the ultimate travel companion Coming in a TSA-friendly ounce-sized package, its non-irritating formula moisturizes and cleanses the skin wherever you are in the world. After a long flight, your skin may be out of sorts flying can exacerbate any breakouts and dehydrate your skin, but this cleanser quickly rebalances it in just a swipe. It also removes all traces of makeup, and with the inclusion of cucumber extract, soothes your skin. “Though the product was very lightweight, my skin was instantly refreshed after usage,” shares our tester. Just be cautious when applying this to a cotton pad as a lot of product comes out at once. Price at time of publish $19 Size fl oz, fl oz, and fl oz Good for Sensitive skin types Scented No InStyle / Jessica Juliao Other Options You Might Like Shiseido Refreshing Cleansing Water Similar to the Neogen Calming Cicatree Micellar Cleansing Oil, this pick from Shiseido is more of an oil than a water, yet still has all the benefits of a traditional micellar water. The lightweight formula, which contains grape seed oil, gently removes makeup and any debris, improves dullness, and evens out skin tone. This is definitely a great option for those with drier skin types who need extra hydration, but our tester mentions that it can feel heavy for those with oily skin and the pump can be a bit messy. Mustela Baby Cleansing Water Mustela prides itself on its baby-safe skincare, making this cleansing water a great pick for the whole family. Safe to use from birth on, this cleanser is formulated with gentle ingredients such as avocado and aloe vera to intensely hydrate without the risk of irritation. Despite the mellow formula, our tester found the scent which she described as chemical-y to be off-putting which lowered its overall score. That aside, we still think it’s a great option for those who need a gentle, affordable cleanser. Our Testing Process To begin, we researched the top rated micellar waters on the market. After conducting some online investigation, we were able to come up with a list of 32 top-rated micellar cleansers to test in our lab. Using advanced technology, our testers measured their skin’s moisture levels before and after use, noting any significant changes. Then, they swiped one product on each side of their face to rate the formulas on a scale of 1 to 5 in five important categories Feel, absorption, effectiveness, hydration, and overall appearance. Once all the testers provided their notes and feedback, we were able to pull together the results and narrow down the list to the 10 best micellar waters. What to Keep in Mind Ingredients Finding the right ingredients for your needs is super important for maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier and preventing any breakouts. According to Geeta Yadav, board certified dermatologist and founder of FACET dermatology, micellar water with fragrances, essential oils, or alcohol should be avoided, especially for those with sensitive skin. “These ingredients can make the formula sensitizing, which defeats its purpose as a gentle cleanser,” she says. “You can look for micellar waters that use purified or spring water, but otherwise, there isn’t anything critical to look for.” Purified and spring waters are rich in minerals that aid in your skin’s health. Both Vichy Purete Thermale Mineral Micellar Water and Eau Thermale Avene Micellar Lotion Cleansing Water contain unique mineral waters. Skin Type When selecting a micellar water, it's important to cater to the needs of your skin type. No one wants any unexpected breakouts or to exasperate already dehydrated skin, after all. For instance, if you have sensitive skin choose a gentle cleansing water like the Vichy Purete Thermale Mineral Micellar Water or Neogen Calming Cicatree Micellar Cleansing Oil, as they are both formulated for sensitive skin. If you have oily skin, you want a micellar water that will remove impurities and sop up excess oil try the Kumiko Matcha Micellar Water - Purifying Facial Cleanser and Makeup Remover. On the other hand, those with dry skin should opt for a formula that is super nourishing and moisturizing. In this case, try out Drunk Elephant E-Rase Milki Micellar Water, which is rich in hydrating ingredients. Your Questions, Answered What is micellar water and how does it work? “Micellar water cleanses the skin without using surfactants — instead, it uses micelles, which are essentially little fat bubbles,” Dr. Yadav shares. “If you think back to middle school science class, you learned that oil and water don’t mix, but oils mix well with one another. Micelles clean the skin using this concept They grab onto the oil, dirt, and grime on the skin and whisk it away." How do you use micellar water? To use micellar water, simply apply a few drops of the solution onto a cotton pad and gently apply to your skin. If you’re using a micellar water to remove any makeup or sunscreen, follow with your preferred cleanser. Otherwise, no need to rinse. As Dr. Yadav says, micellar waters fully cleanse your skin without making it feel squeaky clean or tight. Is micellar good for your skin? According to Dr. Yadav, micellar cleansing water is great for your skin. “Micellar water is very gentle on the skin because it uses those micelles to clean away excess oil and grime, not surfactants, which can aggressively strip the skin of its natural oils and leave it dehydrated,” she explains. Is micellar water toner? Although there are some common features like the consistency and appearance of the two, micellar water is different from toner. In essence, micellar water acts as a cleanser, whereas toner is an additional step used after cleansing. Do I need to wash my face after using micellar water? “I recommend using micellar water to cleanse in the morning. You’ll have gone to bed with clean skin, and the only thing on your skin’s surface is residue from any skincare products you might have worn overnight,” Dr. Yadav shares. “To fully remove makeup or sunscreen, however, I’d suggest a true cleanse.” Why Shop With Us Amanda Rosenthal is a commerce writer for InStyle. We should all be washing our faces every day. But how we do that can vary, from double cleansing to using a cleansing balm. Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. Policy We offer up micellar water as another consideration on how to get rid of the dirt, grime and makeup that’s on your face. Made with purified water, moisturizers and mild surfactants, this skin care cleanser can also help prevent acne and doesn’t strip your skin of oils. And it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals or alcohol, making it a good option even for those with sensitive skin. Dermatologist Alok Vij, MD, explains how micellar water works and the best ways to use it. Originating in France, micellar pronounced “mi-sell-ar” water is a commonly used skin care product that helps remove impurities and makeup from your skin. It’s a very gentle solution that contains a very mild detergent. “The name comes from a micelle, which is a collection of molecules,” explains Dr. Vij. “And it’s called micellar water because there’s such a mild concentration of soap or detergent molecules in the water that it basically like little microscopic bubbles floating in water, so it doesn’t even feel like a soapy solution — it just it feels like water.” How is it different from a toner? Face toners can be used after washing your face and before you apply any moisturizer or serums. While toners have traditionally been used to get rid of excess oil and any residual dirt or makeup left over after you wash your face, today’s versions have evolved. “The newer generations of toners are more focused on skin hydration and are less about cleansing,” notes Dr. Vij. “Many of them actually have water as the primary ingredient — similar to micellar water. The difference is the added ingredients — no micelles of soap, but low concentrations of alpha or beta hydroxy acids, for anti-aging or anti-acne purposes, or moisturizers.” So, can you use micellar water and a toner? Yes, you can use a toner after you wash your face, even if your cleanser is micellar water. Does micellar water remove makeup? Yes and no, says Dr. Vij. Micellar water can get rid of most makeup and some waterproof cosmetics because it does contain a mild detergent. “But it doesn’t take off all kinds of makeup,” states Dr. Vij. “If you use specialized makeup like stage makeup or even some kinds of waterproof cosmetics like mascara, it may not get all of it off. But it’s a great product to get a lot of makeup off. And for most people, it would probably be sufficient.” Other micellar water benefits So, what does micellar water do? In addition to removing makeup, dirt and oil, here are some other benefits of micellar water. It can prevent oil from being stripped from your skin By using gentle cleansers, micellar water isn’t as harsh as more traditional facial cleansers, which can strip your skin of oil, leaving your skin feeling tight and dry. And while some micellar water formulas contain glycerin, which can help with hydration — it isn’t as hydrating as you may think. So, you’ll still need to apply your daily face cream or moisturizer. It can keep your skin clear For those of us with oily skin, exfoliating cleansers and other exfoliating products can increase the likelihood of clogged pores and acne. “Micellar water can be a good solution to add to your skin care routine for those with oily skin,” says Dr. Vij. “It’s mild but effective at keeping your skin clean without over-drying or without using too many added chemicals.” It’s good for all skin types As micellar water is gentle on the skin and doesn’t strip away a lot of oil, it’s a good option for all skin types. “If you have neutral skin to dry skin, it’s definitely great,” says Dr. Vij. “And if you have rosacea, atopic dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis, it’s great for you as well.” How to use micellar water So, how do you use micellar water? There are two recommended ways, says Dr. Vij. First, you can use a splash of micellar water in your hands and gently massage over your face. There’s no need to rinse it off. If you want help with removing any impurities, extra skin cells or any makeup products, you can also use it with a microfiber washcloth. “Use a little bit of a micellar water on the washcloth or even a cotton ball pad and just gently rub.” Is there anyone who shouldn’t use it? Micellar water can easily be added to your skin care routine, making it a great option for all skin types. But it’s important to remember that it’s not a miracle product that will solve all of your skin care issues. So, if you have dryness, acne, fine lines, wrinkles or very oily skin, you’ll need the assistance of other products to help alleviate any problems. Many skin care brands now have their own version of micellar water, which can you purchase in-store or online. As for what formula may work best for you, read the label and reviews and find an option that fits within your budget. “Micellar water may not solve all your issues, but it’s a very gentle soap,” says Dr. Vij. “So, if your skin tends to be dry or if you have sensitive skin, it can be a really great product.”

We put Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review. If you didn’t know any better, Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water might just seem like pure water packaged as a skincare product. And while it doesn’t seem like much more than what you get from the faucet, the water in this case is micellar water, a type of cleanser that’s popular for its ability to clean skin easily without irritation—or even the need for a sink. Could something as simple as this actually clean my skin? I switched up my usual cleansing routine to see if the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water would leave my face fresh and clean. Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water Best for All skin typesUses CleansingPotential allergens N/AActive ingredients Purified water, niacinamide, panthenolPrice $5About the brand Simple Skincare designs products for sensitive skin without fragrance, parabens, artificial colors and other harsh ingredients. About My Skin Likes a traditional cleanser I prefer to wash my face the traditional way over the sink with the soap of my choice. In the past, I’ve found other methods, like makeup remover wipes, never left my skin feeling truly clean. This micellar water seemed like just another version of those wipes, so I was curious to see if it would take off my makeup. Usually, my cleanser of choice is the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil to remove makeup and sunscreen, followed by Cerave Hydrating Cleanser. I skipped the cleansing oil in favor of this cleansing water. Despite my hesitation to use makeup remover wipes and similar non-soap cleansers, I found the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water comes as close to a real face wash as it can. Byrdie / Joline Buscemi The Feel Like water The cleansing water looks like exactly that water. When it comes to the other senses, it acts a lot like water, too. It has the same viscosity as water, there’s no scent, and all signs point to it being no more than standard H2O although there’s much more to it, which I’ll explain next. The Results Cleans skin and clears makeup The brand recommends using a cotton pad to apply the cleanser and wipe away anything on the skin, but because I like to use reusable products, I used a cotton washcloth. The cleansing water can be squeezed out of the bottle without much spillage, and I used just enough to saturate a small area of the washcloth before using it to wipe off my makeup. Despite my hesitation to use makeup remover wipes and similar non-soap cleansers, I found the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water comes as close to a regular face wash as it can. It removed my tinted moisturizer and mascara quickly without rubbing. Byrdie / Joline Buscemi My skin felt different than it does after I wash my face with my usual cleanser and water. I felt like the micellar water had left behind something faint on my skin, like a small amount of moisturizer. The formula contains vitamins and is designed to boost skin hydration, so this may be some of those moisturizing agents that are left on the skin. I prefer how my face feels after a normal wash, but I think the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water would be a great way to remove makeup before cleansing, or as a quick alternative to cleansing when I need something quick and easy. I prefer how my face feels after a normal wash, but I think the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water would be a great way to remove makeup before cleansing, or as a quick alternative to cleansing when I need something quick and easy. It’s important to note how micellar water works in the first place. Debra Luftman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, tells Byrdie that micellar water contains micelles, which are small particles that trap oil, dirt, and makeup. You can use micellar water as I did, as a makeup remover, but you can also use it to completely replace your cleanser, or use it as a toner after cleansing to be sure you’ve removed every speck of makeup and dirt. The Value Affordable At around $5, it’s one of the most affordable cleansers available. The bottle is large enough to last at least a month depending on how often you use it and how much you use at a time for someone like me who doesn’t use it everyday, it will last months and months. High-end micellar waters can go for as much as nearly $100 for the same size like La Mer. So for the price and quality, the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water is a steal. Similar Products You’ve got options CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water $13 CeraVe’s micellar water is another drugstore option. Unlike the Simple Skincare micellar water, it includes hydrating ceramides. It’s also fragrance free. It’s more expensive than Simple’s, although it may be worth a try if you’d like to experiment with which works best for your skin type. Drunk Elephant E-Rase™ Milki Micellar Water $28 For extra hydration in a micellar water cleanser, try this option from Drunk Elephant. The cleanser has ceramides to soothe and to prevent water loss, and wild melon seed oil to provide antioxidants and fatty acids to skin. It costs more for a slightly larger bottle. Final VerdictWith its low price, efficiency at removing makeup, and the way it keeps skin cleansed and hydrated, the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water is absolutely worth trying—even for those who dislike makeup wipes.

People / Jessica Juliao Washing your face may seem like the simplest, most no-brainer part of your skincare routine. Grab your usual cleanser, suds up, rinse, pat dry. But what if we told you that there was a whole product category out there that could totally change how you cleanse? We’re talking about micellar water. It’s made of up of, well, water, along with micelles — tiny surfactant cleansing spheres that act like magnets and bind to makeup, dirt, oil, and debris on the skin, explains Dr. Fatima Fahs, a board-certified dermatologist in Michigan and founder of Dermy Doc A micellar water is applied to your complexion with a cotton pad; as you wipe it off, you take those micelles and all of that extra gunk off of your skin, no rinsing required. Not only are they very easy to use, micellar waters are also much gentler on your skin than traditional soap-based cleansers, notes Dr. Kseniya Kobets, director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care in New York City. And that makes them an especially good choice for anyone with drier, more sensitive skin, although anyone can use Even though they’ve only been around for a few years, there’s no shortage of micellar waters on the market. So to determine the best of the best, we put over 30 through the ringer. We used them to both cleanse the skin and remove makeup more on that point in a moment, assessing how effective they were and how they left their skin looking and feeling. This drugstore buy was our overall top performer. Its lightweight consistency absorbs beautifully into skin, effectively removing all kinds of unwanted residue and makeup, too. Plus, given that it’s free of oil, alcohol, and fragrance, it’s a top choice for all skin types even the sensitive set, and gentle enough to use around lips and eyes as well. It’s no surprise that it nabbed a perfect five out of five in every testing category, earning rave reviews for how it left skin looking and feeling — which was clean, hydrated, and refreshed. How it's held up We still use this micellar water every night and continue to love it, especially on days we wear heavier makeup — since it wipes up the residual makeup that face cleansers leave behind. After using every single night for three months, we still have half of the bottle of product left, which only adds to its already great value. Price at time of publish $ Sizes oz., oz., oz. Most micellar waters use purified water, rather than hard water full of minerals found in many traditional cleansers, notes Dr. Kobets, but this ups the ante even further, using H20 that’s triple purified. It’s free of dyes, fragrances, and alcohol, but does contain glycerin and niacinamide. Both ingredients help hydrate the skin; the latter is also great for soothing redness and even helping to even out skin tone, giving you even more bang for your buck. How it's held up After three months, we still use this micellar water to help further cleanse the skin on days we wear makeup. Although it doesn't completely remove everything we have to double cleanse with a face wash, it does its job, especially considering the low cost. We love how lightweight it feels on the skin — some micellar waters can leave behind a heavy, oily residue, but that's not true with this one. While it does contain ingredients that are meant to hydrate and even skin tone, we felt like our skin was still rather dry after using, so it's important to apply moisturizer after the using this micellar water, especially if you already have dry skin. Price at time of publish $7 Sizes oz. Additional Ingredients Glycerin, niacinamide People / Jessica Juliao People / Jessica Juliao Dermstore Pros Feels lightweight on the skin A little goes a long way — we have barely put a dent in the bottle after 3 months Leaves no noticeable residue behind Cons Although it yielded a measurable increase in skin’s moisture levels, it didn't increase as much as some others we tested There’s good reason why this has been a staple in professional makeup artists’ kits for years. Lightweight and refreshing, it’s the perfect prep step for creating a clean slate pre-makeup application, all while leaving skin more moisturized — although it's not as hydrating as other options we tested. It’s great for removing makeup too, particularly around the eyes, given that the gentle formula won’t cause stinging or burning, something we found during our testing. FYI, while we tested the ‘sensitive’ version, it also comes in options for dry and combo-to-oily skin How it's held up This micellar water is still beloved by us after using at least once a day for the last three months. It continues to succeed when it comes to removing makeup, and we appreciate how lightweight it feels on the skin — leaving no noticeable residue behind whatsoever. Sometimes we use it in the middle of the day when we feel like we need a quick skin refresh. Price at time of publish $19 Sizes oz., oz., oz. People / Jessica Juliao People / Jessica Juliao Amazon Our Ratings Feel 5/5 Effectiveness 5/5 Hydration Appearance 5/5 Absorption 5/5 Pros Small opening in the top makes it easy to dispense onto cotton pad Effectively removed unwanted dirt and grime Leaves skin feeling softer and more hydrated compared to others we tested Cons Formula includes fragrance, which may be irritating to some skin types There are plenty of great micellar waters to be found at the drugstore, but this pick is a true standout. We found it to be aptly-named; while it definitely has a water-like consistency and doesn’t necessarily feel like a lotion, it hydrated beautifully, working especially well for combination skin. It does bear mentioning that it contains fragrance, which may be a no-go for those with more sensitive or easily-irritated skin, although the scent is soothing, pleasant, and easy to get used to. Most importantly, the formula effectively removes all traces of unwanted dirt and grime with just a few quick swipes of a cotton How it's held up We found that this Avene micellar water still does a great job at removing makeup, but we appreciate even more how refreshing it leaves the skin, leaving the skin hydrated as it cleanses. Compared to other micellar waters we tested, we love that this leaves the skin feeling velvety soft and hydrated; we don't even need to apply moisturizer right away after using. Price at time of publish $15 Sizes oz, oz. People / Jessica Juliao People / Jessica Juliao Dermstore Our Ratings Feel 5/5 Effectiveness 4/5 Hydration 5/5 Appearance 5/5 Absorption 5/5 Pros Very hydrating option that's packed with panthenol and hyaluronic acid Extremely effective at dissolving makeup, even waterproof formulas While hydrating, it doesn't leave a heavy or greasy residue behind Cons Needs to be shaken every time before use We recommend a quick cleanse after using if you have acne-prone skin As a general rule of thumb, micellar waters are a good option for dry skin. Credit the fact that they don’t contain drying or stripping surfactants. But we deemed this one to be especially choice for those with a parched complexion, with a milky texture that left skin both feeling more hydrated and with a measurable difference in moisture levels, thanks to the addition of panthenol and hyaluronic acid. Still, it doesn’t leave behind any kind of residue — it absorbed like a dream and effectively wiped away even super stubborn makeup — again, without drying out your complexion. That's to say, if you have acne-prone skin it may be worth to do a quick rinse or cleanse after using as we think it may cause pimples if you don't. In addition, because of the formula, it needs to be shaken each time before use, which isn't a huge inconvenience but still worth noting. How it's held up After testing for three months, we can confidently say this is still a great option for those with dry skin, even during the winter. While hydrating, the formula is not at all greasy and doesn't leave an oily residue behind, which we appreciate although we still recommend another rinse or cleanse if you have acne-prone skin. It's also still super effective at removing makeup, including full-faced makeup looks. Price at time of publish $20 Sizes oz. If you’re part of the sensitive crowd, it’s imperative to seek out options that are alcohol-free and have a minimal ingredient list the fewer the ingredients, the less likelihood of something making your skin freak out. Enter this winner, which checks all of those boxes, and then some. There are no alcohol or parabens in the mix, and while there is fragrance, the formula is both ophthalmologist- and dermatologist-tested, as well as allergy-tested. It doesn’t hurt that it increased moisture levels in the skin, and did a top notch job of taking off even a full face of makeup. How it's held up Our team still agrees that this micellar water is a beneficial part of our routine, especially for anyone with sensitive skin; it continues to be effective at removing makeup without stripping the skin and isn't at all irritating. Our one qualm? We wish the dispensing part better distributed the product. The micellar water squirts out super fast, allowing us to lose a good amount of product in the process. You really need to hold the dispenser tight around the cotton pad for best results. Price at time of publish $15 Sizes oz., oz., oz. That being said, it really is a universal crowd-pleaser that anyone and everyone can use. We found that it added a noticeable hydration and glow to the skin without looking or feeling oily, all while thoroughly removing dirt, makeup, and other impurities. Not to mention that the chic and minimalistic packaging will look extra chic on your bathroom cabinet. How it's held up After three months of testing, we really don't have any complaints — it continues to deliver in terms of hydration and efficacy. It’s part of the reason why it earned this superlative, well-worth every penny. Along with doing its intended duty of cleansing the skin which we found it to do quite well, we might add, it also contains a variety of mushroom extracts that further help to calm and soothe. And that’s alongside a lengthy list of other antioxidant-rich ingredients, putting this almost in the category of a serum when it comes to offering benefits besides just cleansing. The end result? A significant difference in the texture and feel of our skin. How it's held up This micellar water from Origins has made our skin feel balanced and smooth over the testing period. While it cleanses by itself well, we have found it works best after using your typical face cleanser, as this micellar water does a good job at wiping off any excess dirt and makeup and priming the skin for additional skincare. We will even use it in the middle of the day if we feel like our skin needs a bit of a refresh. What we love about this micellar water is that it leaves skin feeling dewy and moisturized, which is also great for anyone who has dry skin. Price at time of publish $37 Sizes oz. Plus, there’s also wild melon seed oil in the formula, adding more moisture via omega fatty acids alongside a dose of protective antioxidants, which are always a good thing. We found that it left skin feeling plump and hydrated for hours after use, and excelled at removing not only dirt, but makeup, too. And even though it does have a bit of a thicker consistency than some other micellar waters, there wasn't much residue left behind. How it's held upAfter three months of testing, we still love the quality of this product and the milky consistency that's gentle and hydrating on the skin. The only thing we'd change? The price tag. Although this is a great product, we don't know if we would buy it again on our own terms, considering there are other great micellar waters available for half the cost. Quick science lesson Oils dissolve oil, which is why oil-based cleansers are so good at removing makeup which, you guessed it, contains a lot of oils. But this ups the ante with the addition of micelles in the mix to even more effectively attach to and break-down makeup, even heavy coverage foundation or waterproof mascara. Just keep in mind that this one needs to be used differently than the other winners on this list. Rather than applying it onto a cotton pad and swiping it on your skin, this works best when massaged directly onto your face, emulsified with a bit of water, then rinsed off. How it's held upWe're still using this micellar water after months of testing, although there are some mixed feelings on our team. One tester noted that she loves how this oil leaves her face feeling really clean despite being acne-prone and that a little goes a long way, while another tester says she only uses it about once a week now because she feels the extra step in rinsing off the oil isn't worth it she reaches for her regular foaming cleanser, instead. However, if you're wanting to use this strictly for removing makeup, it still excels in that department. Price at time of publish $22 Size oz. Additional Ingredients Centella asiatica, tea tree, zinc, azulene People / Jessica Juliao People / Jessica Juliao Things to Consider Before Buying Micellar Water Hydrating Ingredients As mentioned, micellar waters are generally a good option for those with dry skin — but if you really want to up the ante, check the label for added hydrating ingredients, says Dr. Fahs. Some common ones to look for are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, she adds. Our favorite budget buy, the Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Micellar Water, contains glycerin and niacinamide, another good option. Fragrance If you have sensitive skin or are prone to irritation, it’s a good idea to seek out micellar waters that are fragrance-free, suggests Dr. Kobets. ‘Fragrance’ can be made up of many different ingredients and is one of the most common irritants and allergens, though it is fairly easy to avoid. Given that many micellar waters are geared towards those with sensitivities, there are plenty of great fragrance-free options out there, including our overall favorite, the Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1. Dermatologist- or Ophthalmologist-Tested Dr. Fahs suggests looking for a dermatologist-tested designation if you have sensitive skin. An ophthalmologist-tested credential is worth seeking out if you plan on using your micellar water to remove eye makeup, particularly if you wear contacts or have sensitive eyes. People / Jessica Juliao How We Tested Our PEOPLE Tested team tried out 32 micellar waters in our NYC lab to figure out which ones are worth your money. To begin, we first measured the moisture levels of our bare skin. Next, we used a micellar water, taking note of how effectively it cleansed our complexion and how it left our skin looking and feeling. We then re-measured the moisture levels, noting if the micellar water actually made the skin more hydrated. Micellar waters that were labeled as makeup removers were also used to remove mascara and foundation, with the team assessing the efficacy. After completing these steps in the lab, we took them home for long-term testing. After testing was complete, we rated each product on a scale of one to five in the following categories feel, absorption, effectiveness, hydration, and appearance. The products that achieved the highest average ratings made it to this list of the best micellar waters. Frequently Asked Questions How is micellar water different from face wash? A face wash traditionally uses detergents such as sulfates to wash away dirt and debris, although this can end up simultaneously stripping skin of its natural oils, explains Dr. Kobets. On the flip side, micellar water relies on micelles to trap dirt and oil particles and suspend them in water and wipe or wash away, while being gentler on skin, she adds. It makes the experience different, too. “Traditional facial cleansers are typically formulated as a lathering liquid or gel that is applied to the skin, massaged in, and then rinsed off. Micellar water doesn’t require rinsing because it’s mostly made up water and doesn’t leave behind any reside on the skin,” explains Chicago-based esthetician Jenny Fix. Will micellar water remove makeup? Definitely. “Micellar water is fantastic at removing makeup, especially around the eyes, without the potential irritation that can come from traditional makeup wipes,” Dr. Fahs says. Makeup wipes are often packed with preservatives that can elicit skin reactions. How do you use micellar water? Pour it onto a cotton pad or round and gently wipe it across your face; unless the directions specify, there’s no need to rinse. You can also use it as the first step in a double cleanse, in lieu of a makeup remover or oil-based cleanser, or mix a few drops in with your regular cleanser. “I like to mix a splash of micellar water in with a creamy cleanser. The combo can help pull even more dirt and impurities off the skin, while adding hydration,” notes Fix. Can you use micellar water everyday? “Yes, micellar water is gentle enough for daily use,” says Dr. Fahs. Unlike some traditional toners, micellar water doesn’t contain drying alcohols, so it’s okay to use daily, even if you have sensitive skin, she adds. Why Trust PEOPLE? 5 micellar waters I relied on to cleanse my face when I couldn't get my eyebrows wet after microblading Sephora In preparation for my wedding and a lifetime of laziness, I decided to get my eyebrows microbladed by Piret Aava in New York City, otherwise known as the Eyebrow Doctor. The hour-long process involves tattooing semi-permanent pigment into my brows to define their shape and fill in sparse areas. For two weeks afterward as the brows heal, you're not supposed to get them wet. Since I couldn't wash my face normally with water and cleanser, I went through several bottles of micellar water instead to feel like a normal are my reviews of the five I used, from drugstore staples to a cult-favorite French brand that sells a bottle every two seconds around the world. After I went to Aava Piret in New York City to get my brows microbladed before my wedding in August, I was in love with my newfound brows. I mean, I actually had brows. They were defined and full, and I couldn't wait to see how they'd look after they I wasn't in love with the fact that I couldn't really wash my face properly as the brows healed in the weeks after the treatment. I wasn't supposed to get the brows wet so I had to be really careful washing my eyes or forehead. After giving myself a headache trying to figure out how to do it, I decided that using micellar water was the best way. I've used micellar waters on and off as part of my usual double-cleansing routine, but I usually follow up with a second cleanser. Since I couldn't use a cleanser anymore, I had to rely on some well-reviewed bottles and cult favorites instead. Every morning and night, I'd soak two cotton pads with micellar water and sweep them over my face to get every trace of oil, dirt, makeup, and general grimy-ness. Surprisingly, my paranoia of not being able to fully wash my face was just all in my head as my skin felt clean every time, and I didn't get any breakouts from clogged pores or leftover dirt and oil. This means surfactants can bring together water and oil, which normally do not is what makes surfactants a common ingredient in cleansers and soaps. The water-attracting end of each molecule faces outward, while the oil-attracting end faces allows the micelles to float in liquid and attract and bind oils they come into contact with. Neutrogena Deep Clean Purifying Micellar Water is a new 3-in-1 formula that removes makeup while purifying skin. I don’t really understand their 3-in-1 formula marketing they have going on here! Their tag line reads, “removes waterproof makeup + effectively cleanses + purifies”. Isn’t that all the same bloody thing? Especially the part about removing makeup and effectively cleansing. What and what?! Are you intentionally trying to throw a pop quiz at me and make me think hard here because I can’t even when I’m tired in the middle of the night and shopping micellar waters in my pajama bottoms. True story about shopping this in my pajama bottoms. I had to go get some distilled water at 2AM and I couldn’t be arsed to get dressed. I SWEAR TO GOD I am not one of those people roaming the streets in Uggs and pajama bottoms. It was just the one time. No but seriously, the marketing is kind of off here as there isn’t anything 3-in-1 about this formula. It removes makeup period. The end. Everyone lives happily ever after. Well not really, because the formula isn’t that great. Neutrogena Deep Clean Micellar Water arrives your way in a 12 oz bottle for $ it joins the ranks of other new Deep Clean products from Neutrogena this Spring like Deep Clean Purifying Cooling Gel Scrub and Deep Clean Purifying Clay Cleanser & Mask. Garnier still remains a girl’s and guy’s best friends in terms of formula and value as it weights in at oz at $ The formula is light, refreshing, and doesn’t leave my skin sticky nor tacky. But I wasn’t terribly impressed with this formula since it didn’t do a great job removing my makeup. It struggled with waterproof mascara and even regular mascara not to mention it left residues behind from blush and foundation I was wearing. I wasn’t keen on the scent either which at first I thought smelled lightly of motor oil but after using it a few times I realized it sort of smelled lightly of a magic marker or Sharpie. It isn’t overpowering but the scent does linger in the background and is worth mentioning for sensitive users. Now I did say about this was a one and done formula and I still stand by this even after realizing it contains citric acid which can having exfoliating abilities but there is likely the very smallest amount of it in this formula that would won’t see much of a difference in your skin when using it. Also, this might be included in the formula to adjust the overall pH of the micellar water. They never mentioned exfoliating but the 3-in-1 formula seems to apply it does something more than simply cleanse your skin. Neutrogena Deep Clean Purifying Micellar Water wasn’t particularly unique and innovative by any means and it did have a mild stinging when I used it around my eyes. There are a good deal of micellar waters at the drugstore right now and many others that are in the works for the Spring 2018 season. You can likely do better and if you’re already a tried and true Garnier Micellar Water user you probably don’t need to switch up your routine and add this particular formula to it. I think it’s a safe skip. Neutrogena Deep Clean Purifying Micellar Water is launching now at drugstores or get it online at

Micellar water was invented in 1995 by the French skincare brand Bioderma, but you can trace its roots back to the earlier part of that century when there were water shortages in France. At the time, Paris was also known for having infamously hard water, which can strip the natural protective barriers from the skin. Micellar water has seen a surge in popularity more recently. It is known as a great alternative to using tap water when cleansing one’s face, and many people claim to recognize its benefits immediately. Like glycerin, micellar water can improve skin permeability, increasing the effectiveness of other skin products. It is also thought to help people with acne because it helps unclog pores and clear up blemishes. Fans of micellar water appreciate that it cleans and hydrates without stripping the skin of natural oils. Micellar water does not contain alcohol like toners and some facial cleansers, which is a benefit because alcohol can be harsh and even damaging to the skin. Instead, it contains micelles — microscopic molecules made from surfactants in water solutions — which attract oil and dirt and help remove them from your face. Depending on the brand, micellar water can also contain other ingredients, like aloe vera and vitamins. One of the best features of micellar water is that you don’t have to rinse it off. To use bottled versions, apply some of the water to a cotton pad and gently wipe your face, lips and eyes. With the micellar water wipes, pull one out and use it to clean your face. That’s it! Never rub micellar water harshly into your skin; it does the work without a lot of effort. When you finish using it, your face should feel smooth and hydrated. Many skincare brands sell these products now, and you can find them in different price ranges, sizes and containers. The wipes will cost more because you have to pay for the added convenience, but they are great for when you are on the go.
